Avistar closes UK office - or has it?
I've just head talk that unified communications vendor Avistar has closed its UK office. This is just weeks after the software developer talked to CRN about a patent spat it is having with Microsoft possibly having an adverse affect on its business. However the firm is in full channel recruitment mode in the UK at the moment so this is an interesting development. We are waiting for the explanation.
A new online era
Welcome to CRN's new-look web site. It has been nearly a year in the planning but finally it is here for all to see. Our old web site was dated and very confusing to navigate and our main aim was to improve the look and feel of the site to make it more user friendly. We hope you like the new look - please email me your comments sara.yirrell@incisivemedia.com and let me know what you think.
In need of help
Did anyone see The Apprentice last night? I keep wondering to myself where on Earth did they get these people from? The aim seems to be to develop as many faces as you possibly can, stab everyone in the back, and forget how to make use of the grey matter between your ears. One thing is for sure - I certainly don't envy Sir Alan having to make a choice out of that motley crew.
Infosec
I just need to make it clear that I am not going to Infosec this year. Every year the dreaded phone calls seem to start earlier and earlier and event in the week that the event is going on - I'm still getting the odd call to check if I haven't changed my mind. Honestly, I'm really not going.
Water joke
Not exactly IT related, but my journey to work has been disrupted now for over a year by the replacement of 'London's ageing Victorian water mains'. Not that I am bitter at all. It seems these people are plotting my course to work and are trying to make it as awkward as possible. They have certainly succeeded. According to the signs the works are scheduled to last until 2010 - joy. It makes me wonder how long the blue plastic pipes they are replacing the Victorian structure with will actually last. Something tells me it will not be 100 years before these people are back digging up the streets again.
Poor Steve
You have to pity poor Steve Ballmer. At HP's partner conference in San Francisco this week he lamented the lack of video footage of him on the internet talking about 'sensible' issues in the industry. "Everybody always watches the goofy stuff," he said, "put me jumping around on You Tube and hundreds of people watch that goofy stuff, but when I say anything sensible, nobody wants to watch it."
I'd say lets have more of those 'developers developers' speeches Steve - it certainly brightens up a dull day for a lot of people.
